Houzz Tour: a cottage on an Irish river Revived - When the owner bought this cottage by a river, he had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was inhabited, but was very dark and neglected, and presented low ceilings. Designer Maria Fenlon was brought to the cottage open to its environment and give it a much needed makeover.

"I wanted to do something very minimal and simple that would keep the focus on the landscape," Fenlon said. it expanded the part of the beautiful view. "the view of the river is almost like a painting in the room," she said.

A full-height wall cabinets without handles - barely visible as you enter the kitchen - provides more than enough storage. The glossy surface reflects light and adds to the feeling of space.
One side of the island area is substantial small bar for less formal occasions. The island's interior is sociable, making it easy and fun.

As for the rest of the property, the idea in the dining room was to reflect the landscape. Fenlon installed folding doors up a small window, and hung a large mirror, she carefully positioned to capture the beauty of nature.
"The walls were faced with stone on both sides," says the designer.

"We chose to paint the inside of the exterior wall of white to keep the focus on nature," says Fenlon.
The dining room offers local custom wine, which makes brilliant use of a disused alcove. "We wanted to use every nook and cranny of this house," she said .

If you enter the house through the main door, you get to this corridor. to the right is a small landing with steps leading down into the room on the ground floor. a big bounces light mirror around, and a buffet offers a convenient place to store keys and other items.

Fenlon used the same tiles throughout the ground floor to unify home and create a transparent atmosphere that flowed well. The living room was already very dark, in green and red, with a low wooden ceiling. The designer has painted all white for open space and increase of any natural light effect. A door leads to a winter garden, which has been cleaned and repainted.

The ground floor room has been designed to be flexible. The great custom headboard in linen and velvet means that the two beds can remain as singles or be joined to become a double if required.
Instead of hanging a light fixture hanging in the center of the room, Fenlon wanted to do something a little different, so it had hung in the corner instead. "He casts beautiful shadows across the room," she said.

The bathroom ground floor bathroom is simple and elegant. Fenlon chose reflective surfaces to enhance the feeling of space and light.

A second staircase runs from the hallway between the kitchen and the dining room to the first floor lounge. Fenlon built in the library around the stairs.
The original pine floor, which had begun to fade and turn yellow, was sanded and renewed. Fenlon chose to paint the wooden ceiling white to make the space feel lighter and brighter. Inset uplighters in different colors add interest to the room.

the original thatched roof was repaired and maintained for the project. "It was not difficult to work with," Fenlon said, " except that we had a few bats at a time."
