How can I protect my online passwords? -
News broke today about how easy it is to steal passwords from users of Pandora, the music streaming site, which causes over concerns about how sites store passwords of their users. With recent hacks into Yahoo, LinkedIn and Dropbox, password protection is increasingly important, especially as more and more everyday services move to the cloud and requiring passwords . So how do you protect your online passwords? We offer some tips:
1. Do not use the same password for each site: If you use the same password for all your online needs, a hacker only need to steal a website and suddenly they have access to all your online profiles, Amazon to Pandora. Do not think you can remember all your passwords? Try to find passwords for each site that relate to the service it provides. For example, choose a password for Pandora that relates to music. It will be easier to remember.
2. Change your password every six months: Yes, it sounds like a giant pain, but it can certainly help keep your online accounts being hacked. For sites with less or your private information on them (Pinterest, Spotify, etc.), you can probably change your passwords less often, but everything that has any bank or personal information like your social security number must be changed every six months.
3. Find and download Internet security software that includes protection password: This is probably the safest way to protect your online passwords, to especially as the software does most of the work. Most suites of security software such as Norton, BitDefender, Kaspersky and Webroot, providing personal information management tools that help protect against identity theft. The tools range from saving and encrypting your passwords in a secure Web browser that works outside of your office, making it more difficult to follow.
