On fire and in the Cloud

On fire and in the Cloud -

Our office burned down in May. It was nobody's fault and no one was injured. Thank you to the cloud, we were back in business the next day.

Our parent company Resintech Inc., lent us the offices and we bought some laptops. We borrowed our space connected to the cloud and we were running. Then we have the key staff from our sister company we shared space with the time of the fire. Later Resintech rented office space for us nearby, which is where we are today.

It is not that we are not faced with extreme challenges. We lost everything, infrastructure, firewalls, routers, switches, phones, cameras, digital video recorders, PoE switches, inverters, printers, equipment we bought for clients and configuration, and many personal items. The building was razed. Consequently, we had to reset many client schedules and lost some staff because of their frustration with the situation

This is the important thing. Our customers have seen how quickly rebounded us. They want to know that if a disaster occurs, they can bounce too, because they've seen us do. It is more than disaster recovery; it is business continuity. So now not only are customers interested in our services based on the existing cloud, but we get word-of-mouth as well.

A new model
In 2012, I was laid off from a previous IT management position when the company lost a key licensing agreement and had to downsize. I pursued a love sooner, act, and got parts in some fun projects like the TV show Person of Interest and the HBO movie The Normal Heart but I did not make enough money, so back I went to IT. I could not find a traditional IT management jobs, though, because the new model of managed services. You do not hire an IT guy for $ 50K to $ 100K to sit in an office now. You hire a company like VMX, I became CEO in 2013. With this new model, customers need not worry about a computer salary, paying for health care or coverage when someone is sick. VMX has a team and we manage solutions for them, and it is convenient because of the cloud-based technology.

When we buy anti-virus for a client we buy 500 seats and get a good price, and the passage on the client. Everything is managed through a series of gates and it is really effective. Whatever your monthly contract, it does not match the salary of the person you hired computer. I was this guy before; Now I have a bunch of guys working for me who also used to be that guy.

Cloud and on-site services we use the VMX includes EVault, Datto, Intronis, Drobo, and soon Carbonite. We have a variety of price points and a varied menu of offerings, so if our client is a dental office, for example, we have the solutions to make sure they comply HIPAA. In cases where it is appropriate, we begin to look to Office 365, understand that when it really is ready, it will be the alpha. And since we're already selling cloud-based services that will be good for us.

Today, we have 30 clients, against 25 at the time of the fire. We support more than 500 end users in businesses ranging from local SMEs to our parent company, which has offices throughout the country. We are looking to expand to 60 business customers this year

Looking back on lessons learned after the fire, there is one thing in particular, we are really focusing now. Hybrid on-site and online backup. There are a couple of vendors, such as Carbonite and Datto with its new product, which goes back to a local device, and the device backup to the cloud. That's a lot of power and the price point is more affordable, given the redundancy technology provides. We had the hybrid backup in place at the time of the fire for our company, but what we learned since is that many other companies do not, or what they have is not as extensive as what they thought.

We can now say to clients: "We've been through it. We know the challenges. We hope this never happens, but we can help you prepare. "
