Kitchen of the week: A Shaker Traditional cuisine in a town house in London - It almost never happens that you move into a property and are completely satisfied with the food. We have all these different habits that what works for one may be ineffective for another. So when it comes to kitchen design, sometimes the only way to achieve real satisfaction is to go custom. That's certainly what this family of four decided their home in west London. The previous kitchen was perfect, but it just did not quite with their lifestyle or taste, so they asked Charlie Kingham kitchen designer to fit the space exactly to the needs of their families.

Being tailor everything down inside cabinets has been designed with customer habits in mind "We spent a lot of time to understand the life of customers. - the amount of things they had and how they worked in their kitchen - to be able to give them what they really wanted of space, says Kingham.

Even the drawer configuration was custom. "the family wanted to use elements of traditional cabinets, so that the drawers run on suitable beech rails," says Kingham.

All cabinets are made from hardwood and hand-painted in pale gray. The inside cabinets are oak. The work plans are a clear granite that looks almost like marble. The prosecution was existing, and the suspensions were customer choice.

Kingham included an island to increase the sociability of space. "It was mainly to do with the couple with small children," he explains. "We wanted to create a space where people can interact, but that was as adaptable. Children can stay there and do their homework without being locked in the rest of the room.

worktop overhangs at each end of the island, which means both sides can operate as rest areas if necessary. "It was all about keeping it flexible, Kingham said, 'but we wanted to locate bar areas on the sides of the island rather than in front of the sink, as this would have obstructed the view through the dining room.

Although the kitchen is very large, customers do not want to take for granted, and a large part of the redesign was to make the best use of space . "Most people think they have a large kitchen is a bargain, but it can be equally difficult to make a large kitchen counter and a small, says Kingham.
A scale system enabled the designer to install cabinets to the ceiling. When not in use, it has its own storage box to prevent it from becoming a toy for children. The scale and stools are all custom made in aged oak for a naturally aged effect

The cook was customer demand. "They wanted to make a feature of it, says Kingham. The exhaust fan is coated in the same hardwood as hand painted cabinets. A backsplash aged mirror adds depth to the space. 'Mirrored credenzas are misleading and do not consistently show signs of fat in how the grout around the tiles can,' says Kingham.
