Advantages and disadvantages of protecting - continuous data
Some estimates recover more than half of US companies are not fully back the up, or successfully their data in case of failure. For SMEs, this can be devastating. The Department of Labor of the United States estimates that more than 40 percent of businesses close after a disaster never reopen. Among other companies, at least 25 percent will close within two years.
Due to limited resources, some SMEs use less-than-optimal methods of backup and recovery, and some are even dodging the issue altogether. In the case of a computer failure, the consequences can be devastating. According to a recent national survey of small business owners by Staples Advantage, the division business-to-business of Staples Inc., more than 70 percent of respondents said an IT security incident taking business operations offline for a day would have a detrimental impact on their businesses or put them out of business altogether.
for SMEs, data protection solutions should be simple, reliable and affordable while meeting the necessary compliance and security requirements. SMEs must also be able to handle increasing amounts of data. There are many options to explore, but the protection of continuous data (CDP) is one that is increasingly popular. CDP creates an instant electronic journal for storing a complete storage snapshots for each instant in time that the data modification occurs. . To decide which solutions best suit the needs of your customers, consider the benefits and drawbacks of CDP vs. more traditional options such as tape backup
Advantages of continuous data protection include:
- It keeps a record of every transaction that takes place in society.
- If the system is infected with a virus or Trojan horse, or if a file is damaged or mutilated and the problem was not discovered until some later, it is possible to recover the latest clean copy of the file concerned.
- offers data recovery in seconds, much less time than tape backups or archives. .
- The installation of the equipment and programming is simple and straightforward and does not put at risk the existing data
CDP Disadvantages include:
- local disk section is updated only after the replicated data is written / committed to the target disk and the corresponding receipt was posted to the production server.
- Performance on the implementation of production is reduced pending confirmation that replication has occurred.
- In the case of data corruption, the recovery process can be long and dependent on network speed and file size.
- It requires proprietary hardware that adds cost and complexity.
for a small business that has less data 1TB, it is not profitable to save some data with tape and other data with CDP service. However, if multiple servers with different degrees of importance and very large data sets, it may be wise to opt for the time investment in tape backup for one or two servers and then use CDP several other servers contain more critical business data. Another option would be to use online backup that for some servers and CDP for others.
As with any technology you consider the introduction to customers, it is important to weigh the benefits of CDP technologies and choose what makes the most sense for their business.
