Weekly, and often every day, I remind readers of how they are potentially screwed once they start their PC and access the internet. Identity theft is a real problem that messes up people's lives. When the PC is someone hacked and their passwords are compromised, account recovery can be financially 
devastating. Even if a financial institution can resolve the errors, the victims are still losing money.
Most beginning to realize that the only secure computer is one that is turned off.
Many consider these harangues that the sale "FUD": fear, uncertainty and doubt. And selling fear is what allows people to buy your security product. Many have accused the Internet security companies to be alarmist hawking their wares during the Conficker fear.
sale was in progress since the beginning of time and will always be a part of the sales cycle based on fear. But am I really afraid sell? Make those I work with sell fear? I do not think so. But feel free to disagree with me.
The fact remains that there are scumbags out there, trying to figure out how to get you part with your money in thousands of different ways, every day, all day. And if reminding readers of all these scams and sales of a solution is the sale of fear, then so be it. The question is, is real or made up fear? Is there a legitimate fear that must be brought 
to light, and a solution that will solve this problem? Or is it just to sell snake oil and false promises, and taking advantage of people?
Information Week said: "The information security industry has failed computer users, and the Internet has become so dangerous that average users can not protect themselves." The Internet is not a safe place for people everyday. The online world is like Iraq and Afghanistan (dangerous), the Taliban (criminals) are everywhere. Most people do not have the ability to secure their networks or technical know-how to surf safely. Studies show that 40% of Internet users have not updated the security of their browser or their Windows-based computers do not have their critical security patches updates.
The threats are real. The Washington Post reports that Senate lawmakers advance legislation to create mandatory IT security standards for operators of critical infrastructure of government and the private sector. This bill will force safety standards, ensure that we keep the lights on, plowed fields, clean water, and the engines running.
If there was ever a time to be "afraid" and make an investment in the identity theft protection, Internet security software such as McAfee or other protective equipment or software accordingly, is now that time.
