Report: Hackers are increasingly targeting Facebook, Twitter, other social media -

Symantec, the company that produces Norton Internet Security Software , sharing some of their analysis around where pirates like to attack the most, and the numbers indicate an increase in targeting Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other social media sites, according to recently released security threat report Symantec.

The report states that Symantec blocked 5.5 million malware attacks in 2011, which is a huge 81% on 2010. Most attacks come from social networks blog sites, which can be paydirt for hackers because of the viral nature of sites and the amount of personal information about them.

"A social media is perfect for social engineering. It is easier to fool someone when they think they are surrounded by friends," the authors of the report wrote.

Mobile attacks are also on the rise, as smartphones become more popular for surfing the web. The report states that the most common mobile threats are data collection, track users and send premium text messages.
