Kitchen of the week: Tricks cumbersome open a narrow room - Big-city dwellers are used to living in small spaces, but they also know a few tricks to make things feel a little more spacious. Faced with a stifling tonic muddy kitchen with a low ceiling and a window that had been painted over so many times, it would not open, German couple Daniel and Claudia Mahler exercised some nifty moves to make them more open space. Working with the designer Cecilia Dupire, they reconfigured the layout, raised the ceiling a foot, added a small refrigerator and use a lot of white paint to a bright and airy atmosphere.

Designer Cecilia Dupire of Cezign raised the ceiling about 30cm and stripped of molding to obtain as much space as possible. She also got rid of the big, bulky refrigerator. "We decided to rethink the devices and really understand how much they actually use," said Dupire.
It replaced with, a smaller hidden refrigerator with two freezer drawers on the opposite wall. The room has reconfigured for one of the key additions to the kitchen: a table custom designed by Dupire with red oak veneer complements the existing floor red oak. antique chairs from the late 19th century have been found online. "I wanted to add a sculptural contrast to the otherwise clean lines," says Dupire. "They also introduce a sense of time in space."
Above the table hang colored magnetic glass panels created by a small company in Germany which act as a work of art, but also give the family a place to post photos or messages.

a new window, single pane has replaced inoperable, and is close to the workrtop. Its threshold expands the workspace just a little.

new induction cooktop has a downdraft recirculation hood vent hidden in the work plan that increases with the push of a button. "I really like it, and my husband and two boys love the downdraft," Claudia said. "They feel as if we have a Star Wars kitchen."
The extractor hood ventilation allowed the designer to incorporate as many as possible wall storage.

deep drawers provide easy to use storage for dishes everyday, and pots and pans around the cooking area.

a combination micro waves and the speed of the oven is in the new wall of pantry - old space occupied by a small breakfast table. The compact device makes sense for the family of the busy city. "It's big enough to roast a chicken or cook a couple of appetisers plates for a cocktail," says Dupire.

Dupire enters a new refrigerator glass hidden in the kitchen with freezer drawers below. "It would really reduce the space if we went with stainless steel," she said. "It becomes like a wall using control panels."
