Kitchen of the week: A modern solution in a Victorian family home - When kitchen designer Nicholas McColgan Snug first examined this kitchens Victorian property, he already had an open plan downstairs the space, but the layout was not working for the owners. "The kitchen is now the center of the house and connects the dining room and the main living area, says McColgan, 'whereas the original kitchen was disjointed and small - it was like a corridor you had to walk through to get the family living room.

"Our brief was to create a greater functional piece that does not dominate the space, said McColgan, whose background is in cabinetmaking. "the show was to remain the focal point, because it is the main family room. the way we approached was to use, flexible organic finishes.
This design was to cook less "kitchen-y '." the way we did was playing with depth and height, "says McColgan. "You will see that there are half-height cabinets on the wall opposite the entrance, and we used the entire height of the other side wall, but equipped cabinets sunk in. It feels like you're in a living area, rather than a kitchen, and the idea was that the kitchen has become a bridge between the dining and living areas.

"The cabinets are indicative of our style design," says McColgan. "You do not feel oppressed by them when they are mounted in the wall like this. The large units are three times the height of a normal wall cabinet and nearly two times the depth, so one height unit gives about the same as six storage cupboards. Efficient, clean and much less cooking it!

It was important for the couple to show a collection in constant evolution of art in their kitchen, because they have two galleries - one in London and one in Winchester - if McColgan suggested that long, floating tray in a wood finish to match the large units. It is deep enough to contain sculptures and frames.

"There was an existing extension on the property, which meant that we had to do a different reflection when we put in the extractor ceiling for the cook, says McColgan. "We had to create a partition because the extension was a lot of steel beams through the kitchen ceiling.
'It also meant that we could not channel the hood, so we used a filter box, which means the cooking dirty air is passed through a carbon filter and then pumped into the room as clean air, "says McColgan. "Modern filtering technology makes this type of highly efficient recirculation. The other advantage is that you are not pumping tons of beautiful hot air of your kitchen in the garden. "

McColgan is impressed by the result. "In 27 years of design, which has been one of my favorite projects, he said. "It is a simple solution that has created a more fluid space for family life and it feels so relaxed." Even the cat agrees.
