Kitchen of the week: A Cottage is enhanced by an all-glass Extension - Sometimes with properties in the period, the best way to expand is not to copy what already exists, but to do something completely different. And that was certainly the kitchen designer Alex Saint path by Kitchen bulthaup architecture was thinking when he addressed this quintessential cottage in Cheshire.
Rather than attempt a traditional brick extension, he decided, with the owners and local authorities planning to opt for a contemporary glass structure that does not interfere with the existing property layout . "We went to a very pure and simple addition to the house, says Saint. The result is subtle, timeless and wonderfully bright.

After given the more traditional designs, the couple and their designer installed on this surprisingly contemporary glass extension. "It does not bother the original property too, says Saint," and we did not have to change the cabin much to install.
Structurally, everything had to be changed was the opening of the outer wall that leads to the new extension. The old kitchen was placed just to the left, where there is now a generous lobby.

with the structure built almost entirely of glass, there were many implications for the assembly of kitchen units and appliances. "Some of the first primary concerns were things like fasteners. For example, we did not have anything to secure the large units, "says Saint.
A low-level Wall revolves around two of the three sides of the extension, so the back of the base units could be attached to it. "It just meant that we had to be very careful about how we planned the layout of the kitchen, so that in the end we do not need to set anything up" Saint adds. "Everything had to be literally millimeter perfect.

the glass structure also meant there were some ramifications of heat and ventilation. Double glazing ensures the temperature does not fluctuate too much in winter, but the sliding doors - chosen to avoid blocking access to the terrace - need to be left open during sunny summer days to let the breeze through. The oak of the breakfast bar was to be treated with UV finish to protect against the sun, too.

Saint created a design of classical modern kitchen with sleek white cabinets and worktops. "The color of the unit is actually a very soft white matt gray almost borderline," he explains. "We do not want this to be a hard finish, but something a little more discreet. It is easy to clean and streak like shiny surfaces, "he adds," which is great because there is so much natural light in the room, to be displayed no marks.

layout was based on the family's wish for a friendly space. "The cook always be a beautiful sight, either out of the window over the sink, or facing the small raised bar and the garden beyond. When guests are around, they will feel inclined to stay at the helm, who will also keep safely out of the work area, "says Saint.
the right of the sink area is a raised dishwasher, so owners should not stoop to stack the dishes. The cabinet above opens with a push lock, as does the drawer under. Next to the dishwasher is a full height fridge :. The door looks as if it is divided into two, but this is purely aesthetic, creating a line that follows the edge of the work plan

Both cabinets and countertops are laminate; the worktop is 10 mm thick and the same color as the cabinets. "Having a material and color gives the space a homogeneous appearance. We wanted it to appear as a piece of material, a piece of furniture, "says Saint.
Directly under the cooktop are two sockets, so that the island can be used for all kitchen appliances. Lighting was kept as small as possible and is mounted on a rail system, so it can be moved easily and added. The tiled floor was from the owners and that matches exactly the terrace to create a flow between inside and outside. tiny up-lighters are integrated into the floor to create more visual interest overnight.
