A New Year & rsquo; Technology Sneak Peek

A New Year & rsquo; Technology Sneak Peek -

Every December, as the Times Square of workers prepare the most famous crystal ball worldwide for its famous descent of the New Year Channelpro-SMB asks some of the most respected SMB technology prognosticators to look in their own crystal ball and tell us what they see. The following includes the forecasts of experts, bold conjectures and wild assumptions for 2013 in eight key markets and the partner community at large -. With some more bold predictions about "dormant" the most neglected and underrated stories of the coming year

CLOUD COMPUTING
Is cloud computing continue his constant conquest of the computer world in 2013? Absolutely, said Larry Walsh, President and CEO of the business advisory channel based on N.Y. Port Washington, 2112. Group Will generate increased profits for channel pros as well? Maybe not so much.

"I'm not very optimistic about the cloud," Walsh said. "Go Channel partners in general to continue to adapt and evolve the cloud offerings, but [they are] will still be a minority of their income."

Indeed, more than half of partners currently earn less than 10 percent of their gross income from the sale of products and cloud services, according to the latest results of an annual survey of 2112. Group each year, Walsh adds, participants in the survey see an increase in earnings of clouds just around the corner, and every year, optimism is revealed misplaced. "He [are] many solution providers that make a very good living off of the delivery of cloud products and services, but they are outliers at this point," Walsh said.

This will remain true, it continues until the channel pros start thinking about cloud solutions as a new business model, rather than just another service offering. "They have to look at strategic cloud," says Walsh. This means assessing the needs of their customers, inventory their own abilities, building a detailed business plan and retool their sales process and marketing for greater speed.

This is time consuming but essential work, Walsh said, if you want to compete with "born in the clouds" channel partners as Sherpas cloud, Google Apps and Salesforce.com dealer based in Atlanta. Walsh sees companies such as the biggest threat to more established providers of solutions in 2013 and beyond, thanks to their superior ability to use cloud-based solutions to increase productivity and profits. "This is a proposal for a different value," says Walsh. "The average MSP is more focused on the continued operation of the servers."

COMMUNITY PARTNER
Harry Brelsford, CEO of Bainbridge Island, based in Wash. SMB Nation Inc., has its own concerns about cloud computing. Citing estimates both Walsh and Gartner analyst Tiffani Bova that the transition to cloud computing could kill between 25 to 60 percent of SMB channel Brelsford believes the partner community is in a severe contraction, if not next year and then shortly after. "There will be a shakeout," he said. "Ineffective distribution partners simply can not turn into new business models."

Partners who survive the brutal slaughter, however, will be stronger for having gone through it, Brelsford believes. "There will be a flight to quality which are the partners who are serious to solve this problem and make more money," he said.

They will also reinvent the partner community for new era Brelsford predicted. "the nature of the community is morphing," he said, with HTG peer groups based Iowa peer groups as those operated by Harlan, assuming a more central role. Unlike local user groups that have traditionally defined the partner community, peer groups require more discipline and effort of their members. "You're going to add value to community gatherings," says Brelsford, adding that most of the peer group members feel that the reward is worth it.
