Kitchen of the week: A kitchen in a Mews House in 1850 - off-street parking can be an asset if you live in London, but the loss of a garage to win a beautiful kitchen was a no-brainer for the owner of that three-bedroom mews house. "The garage was where the kitchen is now," says Charlie Borthwick, founder of the kitchen design company Cue & Co in London. "There was a room on the other side and a spiral staircase in the center. The layout was everywhere!
architect Nick Farnell NFA Architects redesigned the space and Charlie sat with the owner to design a new kitchen. "To cook really works, it was essential flow into the living room," says Charlie. To do this, he designed floor to ceiling units that flow into the living space next door, then hid the island to the side to create a discrete cooking zone. "The space was something of a premium, so we wanted to make use of every inch," said Charlie, 'while adding some industrial touches and some accent color to give a unique feel and character.

Located in what was a garage, the kitchen has been designed to maximize space. "We always like to build up to the ceiling," Charlie said. "It costs a lot more to do, but there are many advantages. You get more storage, there is no trap dust above the cabinets and they look like furniture rather than lobed units on the wall!
'Then you come around and see the island with pendant lights above and space begins to feel more like a kitchen,' says Charlie, but with its own personality.
