Kitchen of the week: Old Aircraft Parts Factory Gets a new life - A tight budget and a work schedule had been renovating both need this kitchen-dining space from the wait several years after the owner has moved. TV executive shares her home with two roommates, so a space that works well is essential, but the original kitchen was confined to a small corner of the room, while the rest of the space was littered with furniture and bric a-brac due to a lamentable lack of storage.
"the client wanted the kitchen and mezzanine to feel more part of the living space in general," says designer Sarah Ellison Trunk Creative. His vision was for a clean space, contemporary and minimalist. The challenge was to marry his vision and reality together in a workable solution on a pretty tight budget.
The storage areas, built under the stairs, opened the door to a space elegant kitchen-dining, with table oak dining customer - a family heirloom - to take a central place in the open-plan system. "It was important to create a friendly environment that would be suitable for entertaining, Sarah said. "As it is, you can sit at the table while the owner prepares food in the kitchen island, facing it. It is very inclusive and eclectic mix of furniture enhances the warmth, inhabited ".
Glass blocks, a relic of the industrial past of the property, and a row of small windows in an unusual height, means that the overhead cupboards were out of the question. "We had to be very creative with storage space," recalls Sarah. "Ultimately, we bought standard internal drives then customized to fit the space, so essentially we created a custom kitchen for a price high street.

Although the room is large enough to decide the layout was not without its challenges . "There is very little wall space in the room, so a kitchen island is at the center of the system," recalls Sarah. "He has hidden storage and housing the sink unit and provide a food preparation surface. She built the island using a mixture of standard units purchased, which were then given a facelift with custom doors and topped with a black slate worktop for dramatic effect.

"We were taken from the budget when it came to the floor," says Sarah. "The existing floor was cobbled together a mixture of laminate and rubber that we replaced with epoxy paint, in agreement with the industrial environment. It is also very durable and easy to maintain, which is perfect for the busy lifestyle of the owner.

the walls of glass blocks present throughout the property, which means air storage units were out of the question. "Despite their appearance, the bricks do not really allow much light to filter into the room, so we kept the walls and white units to emphasize the sense of lightness and space," says Sarah.

trio mirrors on the back wall were existing functionality, like the dining table and chairs. "The customer has inherited his father's table, so it was always going to be a major element in the room," says Sarah. "It is very traditional in style, but the collection of mismatched chairs pulls back and felt more eclectic, which links with the rest of the system.

"cabinets meet the owner's desire for a minimalist system, said Sarah. "We have continued to look elegant and unfussy removing the handles for a push-click mechanism."
The unusual height window poses a greater challenge, however. Sarah wanted the flush units in narrow windows, which called for some intelligent carpentry. "Ultimately, we used the internal structure of units purchased Howden and customized to make them more before adding new doors," she explains. "So essentially, they are custom units.

"You have to work around people's lifestyles and the final appearance should reflect their personality.

At the floor, small mezzanine houses more valuable elements of the owner. 'This is naturally a very dark space with a low ceiling, so we decided to embrace the darkness and into a comfortable schedule, den-like, "says Sarah. "We used the down pipe by Farrow and Ball on the walls to connect the chamber to the kitchen, so there is a real sense of flow as you move from one room to another, she said.
