What is the Shellshock bug?
A bug is the term used for an error in the software code. This particular bug is a vulnerability that was discovered in the Bourne Again Shell (BASH), which is part of many operating systems, including Linux, Unix and Mac OS X from Apple. While BASH can be found on some Windows and Android systems, it is not likely to cause problems with them because it is not used by default. Unlike heartbleed bug, which leaves attackers access and display information from vulnerable systems, Shellshock has the potential to allow attackers to take control of a system if exploited.

What can I do to stay safe?
OSX users should download and install the patch. Apple has set up a page on its support site where you can download a patch that corrects the Shellshock vulnerability. Once you download and install this patch, you should be fine. That said, it is important to also pay attention to the news in the coming weeks if other problems are discovered and another patch is released.
Always use a reliable Internet connection protected. It is important to ensure all the products you own that are connected to the Internet are secure, and that you only use a secure connection with them. Do not use public connections or unsecured Wi-Fi if you can, and always use a password to protect your home network and work.
