Microsoft Security Essentials fails Major Security Test -
Microsoft Security Essentials, the most popular Internet security software that is installed on most Windows PCs, the independent test failed by AV-test, missing the coveted certification of the testing company.
AV-Test, an independent test laboratory well known in Germany, carried out a new series of tests "real world" on different suites of security software every two months. In the two most recent tests, covering September to December, 2012, Microsoft received too low to be certified by AV-Test. To put it in perspective, 22 other antivirus suites have been certified in this series of tests, and only three have failed.
So how was the score?
1) Microsoft had the lowest score for the protection of all tested security suites, scoring only 1.5 out of 6.
2) They scored only 71% protection against the threat of zero-day malware, including malicious software that has not yet been analyzed and rolled into the definition of an antivirus program files.
3) They also scored only 92% in the detection of malicious software that have been discovered in the last 2-3 months.
to put it in perspective, the top-rated security suite, Bitdefender scored a perfect 100% for each of these categories.
Microsoft has had one of the highest scores for usability, according to AV-Test. They scored 5.5 out of 6 in independent tests with high marks for performance (does not slow your computer) and avoid false detections.
While independent tests are not the end-all, be-all of how security software suites are noted, but they give a pretty good picture of how each suite manages sampling of dangerous malware. If you currently use Microsoft Security Essentials to protect your computer, it might be a good idea to check out some of the other 22 software security suites that made the score AV-Test certification. We review a lot of them here.
