Thinking of deploying a backup and disaster recovery (BDR) solution for your customers? So get ready to do some homework. The BDR market products and services is a crowded. As new players and offerings pop up regularly, finding the right solution can seem like trying to catch a moving train. For new channel partners BDR space, there are some basic rules that can help make sense of this dynamic market.
The reasons for the explosion of BDR solutions include cloud and reduced cost. "The barriers to entry that existed five years ago have disappeared due to virtualization and the cloud," said Dave Simpson, senior analyst of storage at 451 Research LLC. Yet, as low-end, the consumer-oriented products can play a role in the BDR strategies, particularly given the rapid pace of change in the industry. Schulz products we think of the likes of Carbonite and Mozy, while aiming squarely at desktop environments, will continue to evolve and add more robust features. With low barriers to entry, these products can enable channel partners and their customers as well to test the waters BDR with little initial investment.
